We jumped on the reading rainbow

Yesterday was rainy and I cannot think of a better time to visit the library, so off we went. Being that it was Tag’s first trip, my camera came along with us. My mom always read to me, so I’ve been very excited to have kids of my own to read to.

Tag was beginning to tire of his same ole’ books we’ve been reading…Are You My Mother, I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham, Good Night Moon, etc. etc…I know this because one night he yelled out, “the dog is not your freaking mother, and how many times do you have to ask the guy if he likes his eggs green, and just go to sleep already the items in your room can’t really hear you!!” (ok, maybe that was me) Either way we were glad to add to our collection for a few weeks.

What?! I've been doing this for 12 years just to be more sexually-dimorphic?

A few days ago, I was preparing to shower and grumbling to myself about the need to shave. I have been genetically cursed with fast growing, dark, ugly, leg/armpit hair. I began wondering, "Why do we do this? Who began this crazy standard that women must remove every last strand of hair that does not grow on either their head, lashes, or perfectly trimmed eyebrows?" Being in the feministic mood I was (this comes and goes for me, the elections seem to bring it out) , I begin thinking, "I'm certain it was some man who owned a brothel and forced his, well "women" to shave. Then the scandalous men who patroned these brothels went home and convinced their unsuspecting wives to do the same, and now here we are decades later shaving, plucking, waxing, and now lasering our bodies to become free of our natural, God-given hair!"

Well, of course, I went to our trusty Wikipedia to search out my theory on shaving. Their theories aren't quite as colorful as mine, but here's what it says:
For women, the practice of shaving the legs derives from a current cultural standard in the West that deems leg hair on women unattractive. This standard emerged during the early twentieth century, as women's legs became more visible owing to shorter hemlines, and when the safety razor made the practice of leg shaving practical. The reasons for this cultural standard are debated, but it is sometimes seen as an example of a cultural mechanism for increasing sexual dimorphism. Others have suggested that it was promoted as a means of selling razors to a broader segment of the populace.
Ok, so let me now give the definition for sexual dimorphism:
Sexual dimorphism is the systematic difference in form between individuals of different sex in the same species. Examples include size, color, and the presence or absence of parts of the body used in courtship displays or fights, such as ornamental feathers, horns, antlers or tusks.
So, we've pretty much been doing this to increase our already mountainous differences with our male counterparts, in hopes that they will desire to impregnate us, right? Isn't it enough that we already morph into huge pregnant beings to carry their offspring? Well, that won me over....I will certainly continue to shave.
Here are some more great tidbits from Wikipedia:
Some women, despite the social pressures that favor hairless legs in certain Western countries, never shave at all. While some refrain out of lack of concern, others consider leg and armpit shaving an unnatural and repressive societal double standard. Still others refrain in an effort to be less environmentally wasteful (anyone see "Without a Paddle?"). Research also suggests that women who do not shave their body hair are "characterized by higher global self-esteem." [1] Scholars suggest that this is because women with lower levels of self-esteem are less likely to be satisfied with their natural bodies, and thus more likely to alter them. [2] (Well, these Scholars can shove it.)
Most women begin the practice of leg-shaving at some point during adolescence. It can serve as an unofficial "rite of passage" in some countries. Yes, rite of passage. I almost forgot about my big 12 year birthday party where all my friends came and watched as I shaved my legs for the first time. Some of you were there, right?
And finally, here's a favorite:
Many women of East Asian descent have completely lost the ability to grow visible hair on their legs and thus have no need of leg shaving. What?! It's an ability? I'm pretty freaking talented then because my leg-hair-growing-ability is out of this world.
So, you're probably wondering, with all this ranting and raving, if I am going on strike with my leg shaving. No, I just can't do it. I couldn't handle it, and I really do want to be sexually dimorphic for the husband. Be honest, isn't this everyone's goal? I just wish, a long time ago, that the whole women shaving thing had never started and we and the males would not know any different. Who knows though, maybe hairy limbs will have a comeback along with beehive hair? I can only hope.
Oh, and just in case you're curious, those are my sexy, smooth legs in the top, right corner;) I had Jon take the pic.

Welcome to Cody, Yee Haw!!!!

If you think you've visited what would be considered a cowboy town, you haven't seen anything until you've been to Cody, Wyoming. This city is home to a Buffalo Bill museum, and even more interesting, is chuck full of Taggart history, as some of the Taggarts were sent by Brigham Young to settle this city. We traveled to our neighboring state for the Taggart family reunion in August, with Jon's parents. It was a short trip, but we did a ton with the time!

Tag did excellent with the LONG drive! He was just glad to have mom and dad sitting on either side of him.

We took a couple of pit stops as driving through Yellowstone.

Our stay in Island Park.
We got absolutely soaked when we stopped to see a waterfall in Yellowstone, but it was well worth it!
We square danced the night away in Cody.
Jon and his Grandma Taggart. Notice the man in white with the mic behind them. This guy is the Derek Jeter of square dancing.
Bath time took place in the sinks.

Tag got loads of attention.
We cowboyed up for a Rodeo in Cody. I enjoyed some of it, but the calf roping made me cry:( I would only cheer if they got away.

We Miss our Lola Kitty Kitty

Ya know those annoying people who call their pets their babies, miss them like crazy when they go on vacation, throw them birthday parties, and take them along on visits to see family? Well, that's us.
Today is our Lola baby's birthday (or Lola Kitty Kitty as she is known to Savana), so she has been especially on our minds. We got Lola in October of 2006 when she was just couple of months old (in lieu of a puppy). I was never a huge cat person, but of course I fell in love the day we brought her home. This kitty brought so much fun. We really enjoyed every second laughing at the crazy things she would do. We were especially excited to see she and Tag become buddies, but unfortunately she was hit by a car 4 days after Tag was born. We miss her like crazy, but are so happy we got to have her for a while.
So, if you're in the mood.....sit back and take a look at some crazy pet people pics!

1st Birthday complete with a party. Attendees included Grandma and Grandpa Abel and Aunt Mandy (My mom and dad's dog:)

Lola's bed in her room (the laundry room)

1st Christmas. Enjoying the wrapping.

These are from the first night we brought her home.

Happy Half-Birthday Tag Boy!

Our little guy is growing up. We're not sending him off to
school or anything yet, but on August 12th he turned the big
6 months. His doctor reported that he is doing great. Tag is 19 1/2 lbs. and 28 inches. We decided to take an evening hike to celebrate.

We recently bought him a new hiking pack due to a failed trip up Waterfall Canyon, that ended about a half mile up the hill, because of carrying him like this......(see picture above)

This pack does not fit on the hubby, so it was pretty much like carrying him around in my uterus again, except at triple the size. Not cool.

This is our new, upgraded pack. He's like a little prince sitting atop his chariot.
P.S. Yes, Jon can carry this one just fine, but I wanted to give it a try, as he already took him all the way to Waterfall Canyon in it.

This is just the Wheeler Creek trail up Ogden Canyon. It looks like we're in the Himalaya's or somewhere much neater.

Ok, here's where the half-birthday fun comes in. We decided to go with an easy-to-pack Hostess cupcake.

I told Jon to let him try it (meaning let him lick a little cream off your finger) and this was his understanding of the instruction.

He loved it! Do I really even need to put that? Who wouldn't love a Hostess cupcake?

And finally, the downfall to his new, cool pack...not so comfy when he falls asleep on the hike down:(

The End. Happy half-birthday son!

Bear Lake

We took this lovely trip in July, thanks to Jake and Karaline hooking us up with some family land to plop on. It was our first time camping with Taggart....not great nights, but the days were fun!

First boat ride for Tag. Not a huge fan of the life jacket. They're not really constructed well for little people without necks.
Uncle Daniel and Tag

This is classic...I wish I had a better picture, but this is a boat being pulled out by a tractor, being pulled out by a truck, being pulled out by another tractor. John Deere is sexy & the strongest!

He told me to take this picture. He should have known it would end up on the blog.

Oh, I just love my boys. I could not take enough pics like this.

Just kissing my cuz....yes, we'll stop this in a few years.

C. Cake or Pie – Cake.....white funfetti with pink icing please.
D. Day – Saturdays of course, when our little family can hang out together.

To my super observant friends

Yes, Shay and Erin, off with my hair. I think it's great that you noticed! I have been meaning to make a post of it, but I wanted to get a picture with my niece, and it hasn't happened yet. You see, my adorable niece, Jayde, had grown out her hair so that she could donate it to Locks of Love, so we cut our hair off the same week and are sending both ponies in.

I know this moment in a girls life can be quite monumental and even bring tears, but I was so ready for it to go. Sadly, I was always the girl who somehow believed it was ridiculous that women cut their hair after they have kids. It just seemed like the downfall to getting a minivan, hanging around in sweats all day, no makeup, and getting Cherrios stuck to your butt. My have I had a change of heart. I got so tired of pulling my hair out of Taggart's hands that I started wearing it up every day, and then I got tired of seeing myself in a pony tail everyday!
So......
Goodbye to chunks of hair in my son's sweaty little hand.
Goodbye to dumping a bottle of drano down the tub once a week.
Goodbye to spending Tag's entire first nap blowdrying and styling my hair.
Goodbye to pony tails (well, most of the time. I strategically kept it just long enough for this very reason).
BUT, goodbye to young girl with sex appeal, and hello to minivan mom in sweats??? I think not!! Hello to short, "I am a busy mom who, though I cut my hair, refuses to get old, stop wearing makeup, and enter into sweats because I can't quite fit comfortably into my jeans yet:(" That's right, and ya know what? I really like the Mazda MPV, and it's called a WAGON, not a MINIVAN!

Snoring Daddy

Need I say more? I was getting things done one Sunday afternoon, and left Tag to play with Dad on the bed. This is what I came back to.....

Jon is one heck of a a loud snoring fella. I'll have you know this very sound has led to many middle of the night squirmishes that we can hardly remember in the morning. In fact, he is not in a deep sleep here, so it really does no justice:) I love how Tag will just stare at him in confusion. Some mornings we'll have him in bed with us and he'll think Jon is playing with him be making noises, so he'll start to laugh.

Happy Birthday Sweetie

My cute hubby turned the big 24 on July 3. I look forward to this day each year, not only because I like to celebrate with my boy, but also because we are now the same age for 6 more months!
Tag and I picked Jon up for lunch at Iggy's and then went to see Hancock (I loved the flick, but I hate giving movie advice being that most of the time someone comes complaining to me that I suggested the movie in the first place). Tag was an angel and just slept the entire way through. Every time Hancock would take off the ground to fly, Tag would startle because of the noise, but just kept right on sleepin.
That night we met our family at the Raptor's game. I snuck a brownie cake in and we all plopped on blankets to enjoy the game. The talented birthday boy caught a foul ball, and after the game they shot off fireworks. These were the first Tag had seen and he was completely amazed. The loud bangs didn't even bother him.

I would like to bear my testimony......

I don't do this far as often as I should in sacrament meeting, but I was very inspired by Elder Ballard's article in the Ensign this month about Sharing the Gospel Through the Internet. Elder Ballard encourages us to, "talk honestly and sincerely about the impact the gospel has had in your life...The audiences for these and other new media tools (such as blogs) may often be small, but the cumulative effect of thousands of such stories can be great. The combined effort is certainly worth the outcome if but a few are influenced by your words of faith and love of God and His Son, Jesus Christ."
So I decided I would post my testimony on my blog in hopes that just maybe someone may come across it with questions about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and be inspired to learn more.

I know this Church is the only true Church on the earth today. I know Jesus Christ died for me so that I have the opportunity to return to my Father in Heaven, and have my sins forgiven. I know that Jesus Christ lives and understands our deepest pain. I know that my Heavenly Father has a plan for my life and has continually blessed me as I have strived to live in a way that would please Him. I know President Monson is a true apostle and prophet called by Heavenly Father to counsel and bless us today. I know the Book of Mormon is true and offers us hope and comfort in this world.
As I have grown, I have gained a strong testimony on the plan of salvation. Heavenly Father wants us to be happy. By following his beautiful plan, despite any problems that may arise in our lives, we can feel of His love and awareness of us and still feel happy. I have experienced this many times in life and know he is aware of my struggles. I have felt disapointment over not getting into a school program, deep sadness from losing a loved one, worry over family members, anxiety and stress from day to day living. I know that my Savior has also felt this and can comfort me if I am willing to pray and listen.
I have been blessed to be born in a home where I was taught the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have been blessed with a beautiful little boy and a wonderful husband. I know we are being watched over. Being a mother and wife is a sacred and blessed calling. My Heavenly Father is aware of my desire to do my best in raising his child and providing a haven in our home. I am blessed by the opportunity to live so near to churches and temples. I am grateful for all of this and hope to do more to show my appreciation for the love I feel.

Ok, I am now tagging all of you!!! I would love to read each of your testimonies on your blogs. I know we can touch lives and be missionaries! Get busy!

Just the three of us...
